The ocean's wrath.

Overview

The Abyssal harpoon is a one-handed utility spear that deals pierce damage and is used primarily for controlling creatures rather than for direct combat. It is crafted from 8 Finewood, 30 Chitin, and 3 Leather Scraps, and its base attack has 10 pierce. It has no secondary attack, and unlike ordinary spears it cannot be upgraded.

When thrown, the harpoon embeds in most creatures and creates a strong leash between the player and the target. The target can still attack, but it cannot break the leash on its own; instead, the tether stretches until the player or target moves too far, the player swaps weapons or attacks, the path becomes impassable, or the player runs out of stamina. If stamina is exhausted, the leash breaks and the target must be harpooned again. A successful sneak attack deals the normal 1x sneak bonus.

The harpoon is especially useful for moving animals and other hard-to-recover enemies. Common uses include pulling boars into pens and dragging Sea Serpents onto land so that their scales and trophy can be recovered, since those drops would otherwise sink out of sight. It also works well in multiplayer for repositioning creatures or coordinating unusual movement tricks, including being used between players when friendly fire is enabled.

  • It does not work on fish.
  • Interacting with a ship’s rudder does not break the leash.
  • Maintaining contact with a leashed target is easier with a Medium Stamina Mead.
  • For Sea Serpents, a common method is to harpoon the serpent from a boat, steer toward shore, then haul it onto land before finishing it off.
  • The harpoon can also be used to move tamed boars into enclosures.
  • It is possible to harpoon another player with friendly fire enabled, which can be used for long-distance movement with careful setup.
