Overview

The Flint spear is the first spear-type weapon available in Valheim, offering an early-game piercing option with very fast attacks and solid single-target damage. It is a one-handed weapon, so it can be paired with a shield or torch, and it has no three-hit combo like many other weapons. Its light weight and quick release make it a good choice for players who want speed and reach without giving up mobility.

The spear’s primary attack is extremely fast, with a windup of 0.68 seconds, and it deals piercing damage with a modest knockback profile. At quality 1 through 4, its base piercing damage rises from 20 / 26 / 32 / 38, and the same values apply to its stagger potential. The attack costs 6 stamina and has a hit zone of 1.9 distance, 40 degrees, 1.5 height, and 0.5 radius. Like other spear attacks, it benefits from a 3x sneak damage multiplier, making it useful for opening strikes from stealth.

Its secondary attack is a throw that launches the spear forward, dealing increased damage and then leaving the weapon on the ground for recovery. This throw uses 8 stamina and has a total execution time of 1.57 seconds, including the time needed to retrieve the spear. At quality 1 through 4, the thrown attack deals 30 / 39 / 48 / 57 piercing damage, with matching stagger values and 30 knockback. Because the spear must be picked up after use, the throw is best reserved for reliable openings or finishing blows rather than repeated spam.

The Flint spear also has useful defensive properties for an early weapon: it weighs 1.5, has a block value of 4–6, a parry force of 8–12, and a 2x parry bonus. It imposes a -5% movement speed penalty. Its durability increases from 100 to 250 across upgrades.

Crafting and upgrading are straightforward, requiring only early-game materials and a workbench. The full upgrade path uses:

  • Quality 1: 5 Wood, 10 Flint, 2 Leather Scraps
  • Quality 2: 3 Wood, 5 Flint, 1 Leather scraps
  • Quality 3: 6 Wood, 10 Flint, 2 Leather scraps
  • Quality 4: 9 Wood, 15 Flint, 3 Leather scraps

The required workbench level rises with each upgrade, from level 1 to level 4, while repair remains available at workbench level 1. Like all spears, the Flint spear floats if dropped or thrown into water, which makes it easy to recover after a missed throw.
