Overview

Chitin is a crafting material found in the Ocean biome, primarily by harvesting Abyssal barnacles from Leviathans. These massive turtle-like creatures float at the ocean surface and have barnacle deposits attached to their backs. Chitin is also a rare catch when fishing Coral cod in the Ocean, where it can be obtained alongside the fish itself.

Mining Abyssal barnacles is the main way to gather Chitin, but it carries risk. Any pickaxe can be used to break the deposits, and each hit has a small chance to wake the Leviathan. When that happens, it emits a low sound and begins to sink after about a minute, cutting off further harvesting. Once it submerges, it never returns to the surface, so collection must be done quickly.

Chitin is used to craft two Ocean-themed weapons at a workbench:

Because both recipes require a workbench, Chitin is an important early-to-mid game material for players exploring the sea and preparing specialized gear. The Abyssal harpoon is especially useful for pulling creatures and targets, while the Abyssal razor gives access to a unique close-range weapon built from the same rare resource.

When gathering Chitin, it is usually best to approach Leviathans with enough stamina to mine several deposits in a row. Since the Leviathan can begin sinking at any time, efficient harvesting matters more than caution once the barnacles have been found. Players traveling through the Ocean biome should keep an eye out for these floating islands, as they are the most reliable source of the material.
