Overview

The Bronze pickaxe is the second pickaxe available in Valheim, unlocked after the Antler Pickaxe. It is a metal mining tool used to break stone, ore, and other mineable deposits more efficiently than the starting pickaxe, and it also functions as a weapon with modest combat stats.

Its base crafting cost is 3 Corewood and 10 Bronze, and it can be upgraded to quality 4. Each upgrade increases durability and mining performance, making it a better long-term tool for serious mining runs.

  • Quality 1: 25 Pierce, 25 Mining, 120 Durability
  • Quality 2: 30 Pierce, 29 Mining, 170 Durability
  • Quality 3: 35 Pierce, 33 Mining, 220 Durability
  • Quality 4: 40 Pierce, 37 Mining, 270 Durability

The pickaxe also has a 10 defensive value, 2x parry bonus, 50 knockback, 3x sneak attack multiplier, and a -5% movement speed penalty.

Like other bronze items, the Bronze pickaxe must be repaired at a Forge. Because the Antler pickaxe can be repaired at a Workbench, it can still be the more convenient choice in situations where easy repairs matter more than raw mining power. When using the Bronze pickaxe, it is worth planning mining trips around access to a Forge so that its higher damage and durability can be used fully.

One important trait of the Bronze pickaxe is that its attack hitbox extends below the player’s feet, which allows it to dig downward effectively. This also means positioning matters: if you are not above the target or very close to it, you can easily suffer a 33% damage penalty from striking the ground instead of the intended target. In practice, the pickaxe works best when aimed carefully at ore veins, stone, and terrain blocks at close range.

Because it is a bronze tool, the Bronze pickaxe sits in the middle of Valheim’s early progression: stronger and more durable than the Antler pickaxe, but with the added maintenance burden of metal equipment. Its upgrade path and mining stats make it a standard choice once bronze production becomes available.
