Vice

The Vice is a workbench upgrade for the Black Forge. It is used to raise the maximum quality level of gear crafted at the Black Forge, making it a key part of progressing equipment built from those recipes.

As a forge upgrade, the Vice belongs to the later-game crafting chain rather than basic settlement construction. Once placed and available to the Black Forge, it expands the forge’s upgrade capabilities so black forge-crafted gear can be improved to higher quality levels. This makes it especially valuable for players who are refining their best equipment and want to push it beyond its initial crafting quality.

The Vice was added in patch 0.217.4 on June 16, 2023 as part of the Hildir’s Request update.

In practical use, the Vice should be treated as part of the Black Forge setup rather than as a standalone station. If you are planning to improve black forge-crafted items, the forge must be accessible and upgraded appropriately; otherwise, the higher-tier enhancement options will not be available. Because its function is tied directly to equipment upgrading, it is most useful once you have begun investing in specialized late-game gear.
