unit-bryde

Overview

Bryde is a ranged naval combat unit that attacks from medium-long distance using two weapon systems: an artillery cannon that fires area-damage shells and a dual-missile mount that launches homing rockets. It appears in water-capable armies and functions as a glassy damage-dealer that excels when massed with support units. Bryde is especially effective on maps with open waterways that allow it to kite and bombard enemies without being forced into close-quarters engagement.

The artillery fires relatively slow shells with significant area damage and knockback; these shells can travel over blocks and deal splash damage in a radius, making Bryde effective against clustered targets and enemy structures. The missile mounts fire two fast homing rockets per volley that single-target and add reliable focused damage to moving foes. Together the two weapon systems let Bryde handle both static and mobile threats: artillery for group damage and map control, missiles for hunting individual units.

Bryde’s stat evolution over updates has adjusted its role: since its addition in 6.0 it has seen tweaks to health, size, item capacity, projectile area damage and range. Notable changes include an increase in health and item capacity, a size increase (which removed Mega as a carrier option), a decrease in artillery area damage and temporary range reductions that were later partially restored. Its movement speed is expressed in tiles/second in recent builds.

Practical usage and tactical notes

  • Place Brydes where they can maintain distance and fire across water channels or open lanes; their artillery can outrange many enemy units but is vulnerable once enemies close or flank.
  • Bryde pairs extremely well with support units that boost survivability and utility: Oxynoe for overclock bonuses and Cyerce for healing are commonly recommended to form a durable “deathball” that requires little investment in advanced factory tiers. Retusa or other healers can also counter outranging enemies like Ripple.
  • Against Bryde, enemies that close fast or deploy long-range return fire can neutralize them. Ripples, which have greater range, can outrange Bryde and force players to add healers or focus-fire counters. Close-range turrets (Fuse, Swarmer) and charging enemy units are effective when Bryde is forced into shallows or near the Core.
  • Status-effect ammunition combinations such as Blasted + Freezing (noting Bryde’s wet immunity) have been reported as effective for damaging multiple Brydes, because blast-ammo tends to carry larger splash radii that punish tightly grouped naval units.
  • Because artillery shells travel over blocks and have knockback, Bryde can harass defended chokepoints and push attackers off firing lines, but players should be wary of friendly collisions once its size was increased to 2.5×2.5 blocks.

Design note

  • The unit’s name references Bryde’s whale, reflecting the naval theme and streamlined silhouette suggested by the classification of rorquals.
