Grubfruit

grubfruit

Overview

Grubfruit is a raw food item obtained from critters known as Grubs (often associated with hatches and other critter ecologies) and is used as a basic ingredient in several cooking recipes. It appears as a farmable/collectible crop-type resource within the Food category of buildings and supplies, and functions as an intermediate food source that can be eaten raw by duplicants or processed in cooking stations to produce higher-calorie meals.

Grubfruit is cooked into higher-value foods by the Electric Grill and the Gas Range. The Electric Grill recipe converts 2000 kcal Grubfruit plus 4 kg of Sugar into 2400 kcal of a cooked product (commonly referred to as jam or a prepared grubfruit dish). The Gas Range supports more complex recipes that combine Grubfruit with other ingredients: for example, 1000 kcal Grubfruit plus 3 units of Frost Wheat and 2000 kcal of Cooked Spicy Berry yields 4200 kcal of a mixed pie-like meal. These cooked foods provide more calories and better value per ingredient than raw Grubfruit.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • Use Grubfruit as a base ingredient for scalable food production when crop access is limited; cooking it increases total calorie output and improves nutrition efficiency.
  • Combine Grubfruit with inexpensive bulk additives (Sugar, Frost Wheat, or other cooked fruits) in the Gas Range to produce high-calorie dishes efficiently for mid-game meal planning.
  • When cooking in buildings, be mindful of food safety mechanics: any station or ingredient carrying germs can give duplicants Food Poisoning if meals are prepared with contaminated inputs. Maintain hygiene around farms, storage, and cooking stations.
  • Grubfruit plays a role in resource triage for colonies that need to stretch food supplies; plan ingredient allocation because some recipes consume large quantities of secondary resources (e.g., rockets or other systems may require those resources elsewhere).
  • In the Spaced Out! DLC context, certain food items and crafting chains may interact with DLC-exclusive mechanics; verify recipe availability in that DLC if using Grubfruit in late-game production.

Do not confuse Grubfruit with unrelated items or building categories; it is categorized under Food and used primarily as a cooking ingredient rather than a crafting material.
