Overview

Throwing Shard is a consumable thrown weapon formed from a single, lethally sharp blade of super-hardened ice. It functions both as a close‑quarters stabbing implement and as a projectile when thrown, bridging short-range melee and ranged opportunistic attacks. The shard’s construction makes it unusually rigid and keen-edged compared to ordinary shards, which allows it to deal reliable piercing damage and also to be used for harvesting organic remains.

The Throwing Shard appears in several places and as drops from specific enemies. A guaranteed spawn can be found in Cascade Laboratories on level 3, inside the Adjustment Wing: it is held by the corpse located near Cold Storage, and players must cut the body up to make the Throwing Shard drop. In the wild and from loot containers, Throwing Shards are also obtained as drops from Symphonists, appear in Cacophonous Crates, and are given when butchering Chordfish. Two in‑game depictions show the shard used in both a normal stab animation and a throwing animation, reflecting its dual-role design.

Mechanically, the item behaves like a standard thrown weapon with a simple control scheme. The primary attack is a basic stab that consumes one projectile per use; this allows the shard to be used repeatedly in melee until the stack is expended. The secondary action readies the shard for throwing, turning the same item into a ranged attack in a single use. Beyond combat, the shard functions as a harvesting tool: it can be used to harvest remains and butcher certain creatures, which is how some sources of the item are obtained.
