Electrolyzer
Decomposes a product into simpler substances by passing an electric current through it.
Overview
The Electrolyzer is a building that generates oxygen by splitting water. It serves as an early alternative to the Air Separator, but it is far less efficient in almost every respect. The Electrolyzer consumes nearly four times as much power, requiring 900 kW compared to the Air Separator’s 250 kW, while producing only a fraction of the output: 6 oxygen versus 36 oxygen.
Because of this poor efficiency, the Electrolyzer is usually only worth considering when water is abundant and atmospheric processing is not yet practical or available. In most cases, the Air Separator is the superior long-term solution, since it produces oxygen directly from the atmosphere without consuming water and does so at a much better power-to-output ratio.
- The Electrolyzer is a water-based oxygen source.
- It is dramatically less efficient than the Air Separator.
- Its main drawback is the combination of high power draw and low output.
- Before version 0.5.0, the Electrolyzer used a different appearance.
