beginner

The first few decisions in Captain of Industry set the pace for your whole factory. A good beginner start gives you room to grow, access to resources, and a layout that is easy to expand without constant rebuilding.

Beginner-friendly maps

New Haven

New Haven is the balanced, beginner-friendly starting map. The first and second starting locations give easy access to all resources and enough space to build a large factory early on.

This map is the best choice if you want a forgiving introduction to the game:

  • easy access to resources
  • plenty of room for expansion
  • room to scale up industrial and mining operations later
  • ramps can be built to other plateaus as you grow

New Haven was the first map in Captain of Industry. It was first available in a closed alpha build in October 2021, when it was the only playable map and much smaller than it is now.

What makes a map good for beginners

A beginner-friendly map gives you time to learn the core loop:

  • build a working production chain
  • manage space efficiently
  • expand mining and industry without being boxed in
  • avoid early overcommitment to a cramped layout

Maps that are balanced and spacious are easier to learn on because they reduce pressure from terrain constraints and make it simpler to reorganize your factory later.

Harder maps for later

Armageddon

Armageddon is a large island shattered by a catastrophic impact, with a giant crater at its core and valuable resources scattered around the map. It offers a lot of land to work with and plenty of room to grow.

It includes four distinct starting locations with different difficulty levels, so it supports a wide range of playstyles:

  • beginner-friendly starts for learning
  • harder starts for veterans
  • lots of space for large factories
  • strong mining opportunities if you can handle the scale

Armageddon was introduced in Update 2 to showcase the new map representation and map editor.

You Shall Not Pass

You Shall Not Pass is an experimental map designed as a severe challenge. The starting point is a tiny valley with limited building space but rich resources, and your goal is to reach the plateau before you run out of space and coal.

Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with a large flat area for a massive factory and access to more resources. This map is intended for expert players only.

Useful beginner map features to look for

When choosing your first map, prioritize:

  • open land for construction
  • easy access to resources
  • room to build ramps or expand vertically
  • starting locations that do not force immediate congestion

A roomy layout makes it much easier to learn how to place production, mining, and logistics without blocking future expansion.

Starting help from the Beacon

A Beacon is a useful early support structure because its strong light helps other refugees find your island and join you. This can give you more workers and some extra starting loot.

For a beginner run, more workers and a small early boost can make the opening much smoother, especially when you are still establishing basic production.

Planning terrain early

Terrain shaping matters from the start. Terrain leveling combines digging and dumping instructions into one command, which helps with flattening ground or creating ramps.

The basic rule is simple:

  • terrain below the instruction is dug out
  • terrain above the instruction is filled or dumped
  • for mining to work correctly, the instruction must be inside the mining tower area

This makes terrain leveling important for creating usable space, connecting plateaus, and preparing clean construction areas.

Beginner approach

A strong beginner approach is:

  • start on a balanced map like New Haven
  • build in open space instead of cramming everything together
  • use ramps to expand when you need more room
  • keep an eye on terrain so your factory can grow without bottlenecks
  • use early boosts like Beacon when available

The main goal in the early game is not perfection. It is building a stable base that can expand cleanly into a larger industrial system.
