Multiplayer Guide: Play Online with Friends
Multiplayer lets several players share the same farm and progress through a single save together. It changes how many goals are tracked, which purchases are host-only, and how several special items and events behave when multiple farmers are present.
Starting a multiplayer farm
Multiplayer was added in Stardew Valley 1.3, along with chat, custom emotes, and new Cabin buildings. On supported platforms, players can join the same farm and each control their own farmer.
A multiplayer save uses one host and one or more farmhands. Many core systems are shared, but some actions remain tied to the host player or to the individual player who performs them.
Shared progression and completion
Perfection Tracker
In Multiplayer games, the Perfection Tracker shows one shared perfection score for the entire save.
- The category percentages reflect the highest completion reached by any player in the game.
- Golden Walnuts are shared among all players, so that category is based on the group as a whole.
- Split progress does not count. If different players each complete part of a category, that category still remains incomplete unless one player has completed all of it.
The Wedding Ring does not need to be crafted to achieve Perfection.
Golden Walnuts
Golden Walnuts are shared amongst players in Multiplayer. The total found by the group is displayed under each player’s name in the Skills Tab.
This matters because island progression is communal:
- After finding 100 Golden Walnuts, Qi's Walnut Room is unlocked.
- Players may then purchase the Queen Of Sauce Cookbook from the Bookseller.
- The Raccoon’s later rewards also unlock based on the shared walnut total.
Host-only actions and upgrades
Some multiplayer progress is restricted to the host.
Community Upgrade
After fully upgrading the Farmhouse and completing the Community Center, or purchasing a JojaMart membership, the player can buy a Community Upgrade from Robin at the Carpenter's Shop for 950
In multiplayer, only the host player can purchase this upgrade.
When the house is completed:
- Entering town from the Bus Stop, Cindersap Forest, or The Mountain triggers a cutscene.
- The player can choose to tell Pam who paid for the home or remain anonymous.
Pam gains 4 hearts of friendship either way.
- The trailer’s map label changes to 2 River Road.
Anything placed inside the old house is lost and unrecoverable once the upgrade completes.
Multiplayer-only and multiplayer-adjusted items
Wedding Ring
The Wedding Ring recipe can appear in the Traveling Cart stock in a Multiplayer game. This recipe is part of the multiplayer-specific marriage system.
Horse Flute
The Horse Flute warps the player's horse to them.
In multiplayer, it only works outdoors while no other player is riding that horse. It can also summon the horse on Ginger Island and in the Desert. The horse must be named before the flute will work.
Price Catalogue
The Price Catalogue gives the player a power that lets them view the sell price of any sellable item in the game.
In Multiplayer, each player must read the book individually to gain the effect.
Multiplayer chat and emotes
Chat emotes
Multiplayer adds chat emotes and an emote menu. Emotes can be used by typing the command /emote followed by the emote name, or by pressing the Emote Menu keybind. On controller, the emote menu is opened by holding the Right Thumb Stick.
The available emotes are:
- Happy
- Sad
- Heart
- Exclamation
- Note
- Sleep
- Game
- Question
- X
- Pause
- Blush
- Angry
- Yes
- No
- Sick
- Laugh
- Surprised
- Hi!
- Taunt
- Uh
- Music
- Jar
Blush, Jar, Music, and Taunt are hidden from the emote menu until they are typed as commands.
Special emote sounds
Some emotes produce special sounds when used near Flute Blocks or certain other sound triggers.
- Uh plays a clam tone.
- Music plays a mini harp note.
- Laugh plays a dust meep sound.
Multiplayer events and interactions
The Luau
During the Luau, all players must add an item to the soup, or the festival cannot proceed normally. The item added must be an edible, uncooked item. Cooked items and inedible items are not valid.
Adding Mayor Lewis' Lucky Purple Shorts to the soup triggers the secret response. If any player adds the shorts, that result occurs regardless of what else is added.
Children in co-op
If you are married to a farmhand in co-op mode, the main player may be asked overnight whether they want children. If the main player says yes, the question is then asked to the farmhand. When both players say yes, a child is born or delivered following the normal child rules.
Multiplayer-specific item availability and collection
Legendary Fish
The Legend is one of the five Legendary Fish. In multiplayer, it can be caught once per save file or once per player.
???
The ??? hat can be obtained by interacting with a monkey in the Volcano Caldera after achieving 100% Perfection. In multiplayer, it can be obtained once per player.
Cabin inventory recovery
Demolishing a Cabin in Multiplayer creates a chest containing the farmhand's inventory in place of the cabin.
Platform notes
Stardew Valley 1.3 brought multiplayer to supported versions of the game.
The PS Vita version does not receive later content updates, including multiplayer, because of platform limitations.
