Animal
Overview
Animals on the farm are housed in barns, coops, or other animal buildings and must be fed regularly to remain productive. Most farm animals eat either fresh grass when allowed outside or hay when kept indoors. They do not die from neglect, but if they are not fed they become unhappy and stop producing until feeding resumes. Animals also build friendship and mood over time, and both values affect what they produce.
Friendship can be checked after petting an animal by right-clicking it, and the Animals tab in the player menu shows all owned animals’ friendship and whether they have been petted that day. Friendship is measured in hearts, with each half-heart equal to 100 points and a maximum of 1000. Petting, milking, shearing, and letting animals eat grass all raise friendship, while not feeding, leaving them outside overnight, or failing to pet or talk to them lowers it. Mood is separate from friendship, but it is checked at the same time and has an even larger effect on production.
- Mood ranges from 0 to 255 and is also visible from the animal’s reaction after petting.
- Mood affects whether an animal produces at all, and also whether it can produce large, deluxe, or higher-quality items.
- Fresh grass sets mood to its maximum, while being unpetted, unfed, left in the rain, or trapped outside can lower it.
- Higher friendship and mood improve the chance of better-quality products such as Silver, Gold, or Iridium items.
Newly purchased, hatched, or born animals do not need food on the day they arrive, but must be fed on later days to keep growing and producing. Animals in coops and barns can be sold by opening their friendship window after petting them and clicking the gold coin button. Their sell price is based on their original price and friendship.
Different animal types produce different goods: chickens lay eggs, ducks lay eggs or duck feathers, rabbits produce wool or rabbit’s feet, and adult farm animals in barns and coops can produce items such as milk, wool, and other animal products depending on species and condition. Some animals also have special rules, such as blue chickens, void chickens, golden chickens, and golden animal crackers, which can permanently double produce for most farm animals except pigs. Hats can be placed on cats, dogs, horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and horses, but not on turtles.
