Overview

Herring is a fish that can be caught during Spring and Winter. It is one of the season-specific fish used in several side activities rather than being tied to a single major progression path. Like other fish, it can also be stored, gifted, sold, or kept for requests and crafting-related uses.

A Herring has a few notable uses outside of selling. It can be placed in a Fish Pond, where it will reproduce every day. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be expanded to 10 by completing two quests. Herring ponds produce only blue Herring Roe, making them very straightforward compared with fish that have multiple pond outputs. The pond progression rewards 25 Fishing XP for the first upgrade quest and another 25 Fishing XP for the second.

Herring is also useful for tailoring and dyeing. One Herring can be used in the Sewing Machine spool to make the dyeable Sailor Shirt. It can also be used as a blue dye item at the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s house at 2 Willow Lane.

Several Help Wanted board requests may ask for Herring during its active seasons. An item delivery request can randomly ask for one Herring in Spring or Winter, and fishing requests from Demetrius or Willy can ask for 1–5 Herring in those same seasons. In both cases, the fish may be kept after completing the request.

  • Herring can be placed in a Fish Pond and will reproduce daily.
  • Fish Pond capacity starts at 3 and can be raised to 10 through two quests.
  • The only Fish Pond product is blue Herring Roe.
  • It can be used to make the dyeable Sailor Shirt.
  • It counts as a blue dye item.
  • It can appear in Help Wanted requests in Spring or Winter.

Because Herring has a narrow seasonal window and a fixed pond output, it is a convenient fish to stockpile if you want a reliable source of Roe or need an easy fish for tailoring and request boards.
