Catfish

Catfish is a fish that can be caught in the river, in the Secret Woods pond when it is raining, and in the Witch's Swamp. It is also a possible request item on the Help Wanted board outside Stone's General Store during Spring or Fall.

Catfish can be used in the spool of the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable Fish Shirt. It can also be placed in a Fish Pond, where it reproduces every 4 days. A Fish Pond starts with room for 3 Catfish, and its capacity can be increased to 10 by completing three quests.

The only product a Catfish pond can generate is dark gray Catfish Roe. The pond quests request fish-related and mining-related items as the population increases:

• At 3 fish, the pond expands to 5 fish and may request 2 Amethyst, 3 Copper Bars, 3 Red Mushrooms, or 2 Topaz.
• At 5 fish, the pond expands to 7 fish and may request 10 Bat Wing, 2 Earth Crystals, 5 Mixed Seeds, or 2-3 Purple Mushrooms.
• At 7 fish, the pond expands to 10 fish and may request 1 Diamond, 3 Iron Bars, 1 Mayonnaise, or 1 Pickles.

Each completed quest grants 40 Fishing XP. In addition, a full Catfish pond produces Roe with a daily chance that depends on population, while empty production does not occur. The pond can hold between 1 and 10 fish, and its output is entirely limited to Catfish Roe.

On the Help Wanted board, Catfish requests may appear in two ways. One asks for a single Catfish and rewards gold plus 150 Friendship points. Another asks for 1-4 Catfish to be caught for a per-fish reward, and the player keeps the fish after turning in the quest.
