Roe

Roe are fish eggs produced by fish in a Fish Pond. They are a basic fish product and one of the common outputs of ponded fish, though not every pondable creature produces them: both Squid varieties instead make Squid Ink, and Coral does not produce roe. Sea Urchins do produce roe. Roe can also appear in Fishing Treasure Chests after obtaining the power from the Jewels Of The Sea book, with a 25% chance, and this treasure source can include fish roe from fish such as Squid and Midnight Squid, but not Sea Urchin Roe.

The selling price of Roe depends on the fish’s base sell price, using the formula 30 + (base fish sell price / 2), rounded down. Roe has the same health and energy values regardless of type. Its color and price generally reflect the fish it came from, with the displayed color usually matching the fish’s dye color; Sturgeon is the exception, since its roe is black and is used as a blue dye in dye pots. Fish without a dye color use orange roe. Even so, all roe produce orange dye when used for dyeing.

All types of roe can be processed in a Preserves Jar. Sturgeon Roe becomes Caviar, while all other roe become fish-specific varieties of Aged Roe. Aged Roe sells for 2 × Roe price. Roe itself is not assigned to any category, so it does not benefit from any Profession. It cannot be sold to Stone's General Store, but it can be sold to the Fish Shop or shipped in the Shipping Bin. At the Stardew Valley Fair, it is treated as uncategorized trash and is worth 2–3 judging points.

Roe can also be used in tailoring. Placing it in the Sewing Machine spool creates the dyeable Polka Dot Shirt, and it can be used as orange dye at the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s house at 2 Willow Lane.
