Oyster

oyster

Overview

The Oyster is a fish caught with a Crab Pot in any saltwater body of water. It can also be foraged from the Beach and may appear at the Traveling Cart. Like other Crab Pot catches, it cannot be eaten raw, but it can still be used in cooking or smoked.

Oysters are also useful in a few crafting and animal-related systems. They can be placed in a Fish Pond, where they reproduce every 2 days. A newly built pond starts with a capacity of 3, and that capacity can be increased to 10 by completing the pond’s fish quests. At higher populations, the pond can produce more valuable items in addition to its usual output.

Typical Fish Pond production includes dark gray Oyster Roe, Seaweed, and various trash items such as Driftwood, Broken Glasses, Broken CD, and Soggy Newspaper. Once the pond population reaches 5 or higher, it can also produce Coral, Sea Urchin, Warp Totem: Beach, and Nautilus Shell. The chance of getting nothing decreases as population rises, while Roe becomes more common. The fish pond quests for oysters are:

An Oyster may also be requested in other Fish Pond quests. Octopus, Rainbow Trout, Spook Fish, or Super Cucumber can ask for one Oyster to upgrade a pond from 3 to 5 capacity. Five Oysters may also be requested by The Raccoon, both for the first request and for the sixth request onward.

Outside of fish ponds, the Oyster has a Tailoring use: it can be placed in the Sewing Machine spool to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt.

Because it is a Crab Pot catch, the Oyster is most convenient to obtain by setting Crab Pots along saltwater shores rather than by active fishing. Beach foraging and the Traveling Cart provide alternate ways to obtain it when you need one for pond requests, tailoring, or other uses.
