Rainbow Trout

The Rainbow Trout is a fish that can be caught in the river in Pelican Town and Cindersap Forest, as well as in the mountain lake, during Summer on sunny days. It can also be caught in Cindersap Forest during the Trout Derby on Summer 20 and 21 regardless of weather, time, or season, and the usual weather restrictions are also ignored when using Magic Bait. In addition, it may be found in Garbage Cans during Summer, given as a gift by a pet cat with maximum friendship, or sold by the Traveling Cart.

Rainbow Trout is not used in any bundles. It can, however, be useful for fishing-related requests and for several other systems in the game:

• It may be requested on the Help Wanted board as a single fish delivery in Summer.
• Demetrius or Willy may request 1–4 Rainbow Trout for a fishing quest on the Help Wanted board, and the fish is kept when turned in.
• Demetrius may also request 10 Rainbow Trout for the Aquatic Overpopulation Special Order, which rewards gold equal to the fish’s sale value and the Farm Computer recipe.

Rainbow Trout can be placed in a Fish Pond, where they reproduce every 2 days. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 and can be expanded to 10 by completing three quests. The pond’s main product is orange Rainbow Trout Roe. At higher populations, it can produce more valuable items, including a very small daily chance of a Prismatic Shard once the pond population is high enough.

The pond quest progression is as follows:

• Capacity 3 → 5: the requested item is 3 Coral, 1 Honey, 1 Oyster, or 3 Refined Quartz, and the reward is 30 Fishing XP.
• Capacity 5 → 7: the requested item is 1 Dried Starfish, 2 Emeralds, 2–3 Omni Geodes, or 2–3 Purple Mushrooms, and the reward is 30 Fishing XP.
• Capacity 7 → 10: the requested item is 1 Diamond, 3 Gold Bars, 1 Iridium Ore, 1 Jelly, or 1 Pickle, and the reward is 30 Fishing XP.

Rainbow Trout also has a use in tailoring. It can be placed in the spool of the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable Fish Shirt, and it can be used as orange dye in the dye pots at Haley’s and Emily’s house.
