Overview

Refined Quartz is a refined material produced by smelting Quartz or Fire Quartz in a Furnace, and it can also be obtained through several other methods. Smelting 1 Quartz with 1 Coal takes 1.5 in-game hours and yields 1 Refined Quartz, while smelting 1 Fire Quartz with 1 Coal yields 3 Refined Quartz. It is one of the more useful mineral products in the game because it is tied to crafting, tailoring, dyeing, quests, and fish pond requests.

Besides direct smelting, Refined Quartz can be acquired by recycling Broken CDs or Broken Glasses, and it may occasionally appear in Garbage Cans after the Furnace blueprints have been received from Clint. It can also be found very rarely by breaking large crystals in the Mines, dropped rarely by Ghosts on floors 51–79, dropped by Carbon Ghosts in the Skull Cavern with a 10% chance, and produced by Ghostfish Fish Ponds once the population reaches 9.

Refined Quartz is used in several crafting recipes, including Crystal Floor, Crystal Path, the Farm Computer, Garden Pot, Lightning Rod, Quality Sprinkler, Sonar Bobber, and Solar Panel. It is also used in tailoring: in the Sewing Machine spool, it creates the dyeable Necklace Shirt. In dye pots, it functions as a purple dye.

It can also appear in requests and progression-related tasks:

  • It may be requested on the Help Wanted board outside Stone’s General Store, but not until the Furnace blueprints have been obtained.
  • Such requests reward money and Friendship points.
  • Fish Pond quests may ask for 2, 3, 5, or 10 Refined Quartz.

Because Fire Quartz produces 3 Refined Quartz per smelt, it is often a more efficient source than Quartz when enough Fire Quartz is available. Until the Crystalarium is obtained, recycling Broken CDs and Broken Glasses is generally a faster and easier way to stockpile Refined Quartz than mining Quartz and smelting it one piece at a time.
