Overview

The Mines are a multi-floor dungeon in Stardew Valley and the main place where the Mining skill is put to use. They are filled with rocks, ore nodes, monster-infested floors, geodes, gems, and other mineral finds, making them one of the game’s most important sources of raw materials. Breaking rocks and nodes inside the Mines is the core way to gain Mining experience, and the size and type of rock determine how many hits are required; some tougher rocks and nodes also require a better Pickaxe.

The Mines are initially inaccessible for the first four days of the game because a landslide blocks the entrance. On Spring 5 of Year 1, the player receives a letter saying that Joja Corp. has cleared the landslide, and the Mines become available.

Several kinds of minerals and gems can be found there. Foraged minerals lie directly on the ground and can be picked up like other forageables. Quartz, Earth Crystal, Frozen Tear, and Fire Quartz all come from specific ranges of Mine floors. Picking up a foraged mineral normally does not grant Foraging XP, although a Gatherer duplicate can grant 7 Foraging XP because of a bug. Minerals found this way, and minerals from geodes, count toward the Collections tab as soon as they are picked up.

The Mines are also a major source of gems and geode materials. All gems except Diamond and Prismatic Shard can appear in crates and barrels in the Mines, and many of them are liked or loved gifts. Geodes are broken open at Clint’s forge or by a Geode Crusher to reveal minerals, artifacts, or resources. The common Geode appears in the early floors, Frozen Geode in the middle floors, Magma Geode in the deepest floors, and Omni Geodes can contain any mineral. Geode minerals are especially useful for museum donations, tailoring, and dyeing.

A number of mine-specific nodes can also appear there. Aquamarine, Emerald, Jade, Ruby, and Topaz nodes can be found on the appropriate floors, while Diamond Nodes begin appearing at floor 50 and become more common deeper down. Rock-breaking also gives Mining XP based on the type of rock: normal rocks in the Mines usually give no XP on their own, but coal or ore drops from them grant 5 XP, and special node types grant their own values. Bombs can also award Mining skill points when they destroy rocks, but monsters that break rocks do not grant XP.

The Mines are closely tied to Mining progression and profession bonuses:

  • Mining skill increases Pickaxe proficiency by 1 per level.
  • The Geologist profession gives specific gem nodes a 50% chance to spawn twice the gems.
  • The Gatherer profession can double foraged minerals on the ground.
  • The Geode Crusher is free to use once available, while Clint charges to process geodes.

In short, the Mines are the game’s primary underground resource area: they unlock early, scale with progress, and provide ores, gems, geodes, and rare minerals that support crafting, gifting, museum completion, and tool and weapon upgrades.
