Overview

The Blacksmith is Clint’s shop in the Mountain area, and it serves several functions tied to mining and tool progression. It is the main place to upgrade the four primary tools and the Trash Can, to process geodes, and to buy or sell several resource items. The building is also Clint’s home, with his bedroom located behind the shop floor.

Clint sells raw materials that are especially useful early in the game: Copper Ore, Iron Ore, Coal, and Gold Ore. These items become more expensive starting in Year 2, when the price of raw materials at Robin’s shop and Clint’s shop increases. The Year 1 and Year 2+ prices are:

  • Copper Ore: 75g / 150g
  • Iron Ore: 150g / 250g
  • Coal: 150g / 250g
  • Gold Ore: 400g / 750g

Clint also buys gems, minerals, ore, and bars directly from the player. He does not buy geodes themselves, though ores obtained from them can be sold back to him. Selling items to Clint, or through the shipping bin, does not change in price as the years pass.

One of the Blacksmith’s most important services is tool upgrading. Clint upgrades the Axe, Pickaxe, Hoe, Watering Can, and Trash Can in sequence, with each quality tier requiring the previous tier first. A tool cannot skip directly from copper to gold without first becoming steel. Each upgrade takes 2 days, and other Blacksmith services remain available while a tool is being upgraded. A notification appears in the lower-left corner of the screen on the morning the upgrade is ready.

Upgraded tools provide major benefits. Higher-tier Axes and Pickaxes require fewer hits to break trees and rocks, and later versions can also break larger obstacles such as logs, stumps, boulders, and meteorites. Upgraded Hoes and Watering Cans can affect multiple tiles at once by click-and-hold, and upgrading the Watering Can also refills it. Trash Can upgrades raise the sell-back value of discarded items, reaching as high as 60%.

The Blacksmith also breaks open geodes, including Geodes, Frozen Geodes, Magma Geodes, Omni Geodes, Artifact Troves, Golden Coconuts, Mystery Boxes, and Golden Mystery Boxes. Standard geodes can contain minerals, gems, and common resources such as Stone, Clay, and Coal. Artifact Troves can be purchased from the Desert Trader for 5 Omni Geodes and processed here as well.

A few practical notes make the shop easier to use:

  • If you want to avoid losing a watering day, a good time to upgrade the Watering Can is when rain is forecast for the next day.
  • The Watering Can is often best upgraded near the end of a season, when no crops will need immediate watering.
  • In Year 1, it can be cheaper to buy wood and make Coal with a Charcoal Kiln; in Year 2, buying Coal directly becomes the better deal.
  • The Blacksmith door locks at 4:00 PM, but if the player is already inside, they can still use the counter after that time, even after Clint leaves it at 5:00 PM.
