Backwoods

Region
Secret Woods

Overview

The Backwoods is an exterior region in the northwest part of Stardew Valley. It consists of two disconnected sections: a higher-elevation path that forms an L-shaped curve connecting the Farm to the Mountain, and a lower area that can initially be reached only by heading west from the Bus Stop along the road. The lower section also provides access to The Tunnel. After the shortcuts Community Upgrade is completed, a staircase connects the two elevations.

The area is primarily useful for travel and gathering. Forageable items can spawn on the ground in the higher-elevation section of the Backwoods, with an average spawn rate of 0.4 per night in spring, summer, and fall, and 0.25 per night in winter. The map contains several possible spawn tiles, and some of them are partially hidden behind the original trees, making them much less likely to produce items. In practice, this means the visible open tiles are the most reliable places to check. The Backwoods also contains numerous Salmonberry and Blackberry bushes in both sections, making it a good seasonal source of those berries.

Artifact Spots also appear only in the higher-elevation section. They spawn at an average rate of 0.06 per night in most seasons, rising sharply to 0.4 per night in winter. Digging them up can produce a range of common resources and geodes, along with other standard artifact-spot drops. Once all Lost Books have been found, any would-be Lost Book from a spot is replaced by another item instead.

No villagers walk through the Backwoods, so items can be placed there without being disturbed by NPC pathing. This makes the area safe for temporary storage, decoration, or other player-made setups in spots that are convenient to reach.

The lower section is also important for the Blackberry Basket quest. After receiving Linus’ letter and accepting the quest, the basket appears on the left side of the lower Backwoods. It can be seen from the upper path, but it cannot be reached from there; the player must enter from the Bus Stop side and follow the road west to pick it up.
