Tips & Tricks: Things You Should Know
Stardew Valley tips are mostly about making daily routines more efficient, squeezing more value out of crops and animal products, and using the game’s timing rules to your advantage. Small habits with shipping, fishing, farming, and gifts add up quickly over a season.
General daily efficiency
- Sleep advances the day and restores Energy and Health based on when you go to bed.
- Passing out or becoming exhausted leaves you with less recovery the next morning.
- Time still matters after midnight, but there is no benefit to staying awake until 2am unless you are using the extra time productively.
Shipping and selling
Shipping and merchant sales pay the same amount of gold, but shipping pays the next day. Shipping is also required for shipping-specific completion goals.
- Use the Shipping Bin for items you want counted toward collection and perfection progress.
- Use merchants when you want immediate payment.
- Iridium quality items sell for the most, followed by gold, silver, then regular quality.
Professions and processing profit
Processing is usually strongest when you start from regular-quality ingredients.
Artisan processing
Kegs are almost always profitable for Fruits, Vegetables, Coffee Beans, and Honey when turning them into artisan goods. The profit is lowest with iridium-quality inputs and highest with regular-quality inputs.
Keg processing times vary by product:
Beer, Mead, Pale Ale, and Wine can be aged in a Cask for additional profit.
Animal products
Many animal products are worth processing, but not all of them are always better processed than sold raw.
- Eggs and Large Eggs are always worth processing.
Cheese and Goat Cheese are strong candidates for aging in a Cask.
Wool can be profitable over time because Looming can sometimes produce extra Cloth.
- For some products, the best choice depends on quality, profession, and available processing equipment.
Fishing products and cooking
Some fish are better turned into Sashimi only when their raw value is low enough.
Crab pot catches are often best used for Sashimi or Quality Fertilizer.
- Smoked fish are worth more than the same fish used raw in many cases.
- Some recipes can be profitable even when cooked from the lowest-quality ingredients.
Farming tips
Watering Can upgrades
Upgrading the Watering Can is easiest when crop pressure is low.
- Upgrade during Winter when possible.
- Upgrade right before rainy or stormy weather if your crops will be watered by the weather the next day.
- A Rain Totem can create a rainy day for this purpose.
- The Watering Can can also be upgraded on the 27th day of a season when most crops do not need watering.
Deluxe Speed-Gro
Deluxe Speed-Gro speeds crop growth and is especially useful for single-harvest crops.
- It can be placed before or after planting.
- It can also be applied after a crop has already started growing.
- It does not shorten regrowth time for multi-harvest crops.
Greenhouse planning
The Greenhouse is one of the best places to focus long-term crop production.
- Crops grow in any season there.
- Crops still need water.
- Sprinkler layouts should be planned to maximize planting space.
- Fruit trees can be planted around the outer edge where there is room.
Winter as a maintenance season
Winter is ideal for reorganizing the farm.
- Outdoor crops generally stop growing.
- Farming pressure drops sharply.
- It is a good time for mining, fishing, foraging, upgrades, and gifting.
Animal and barn/co-op tips
Feeding and mood
Animals need to be fed every day to keep producing.
- Fresh grass makes animals happiest.
Hay is used when they stay indoors or cannot reach grass.
- Animals do not need feed on most festival days.
- Mood strongly affects product quality and type.
Letting animals outside
Animals that eat grass outdoors become very happy.
- Keep coop and barn doors open during good weather.
- Animals normally return by evening.
- Closing the doors too early can trap animals outside overnight and expose them to wild animal attacks.
Golden Animal Cracker
Golden Animal Cracker is one of the strongest animal efficiency items.
- It doubles output for a non-pig animal.
- It also doubles Fish Pond output.
- It does not speed up output schedules.
- It cannot be used twice on the same animal or pond.
Fishing tips
Fishing level and tackle
Fishing quality and consistency improve a lot with skill and tackle.
- Higher Fishing skill increases the size of the catch bar.
- Iridium Rod and Advanced Iridium Rod are the only rods that can use tackle.
- Tackle effects wear down after nibbles from fish, but not from non-fish catches like Jelly,
Seaweed, Trash, or special items.
- Advanced Iridium Rod can equip two tackles.
Treasure chests
Treasure chests are worth prioritizing when possible.
- They can appear during the fishing minigame after a short delay.
- Missing the fish also loses the chest.
- Treasure chance can be boosted by tackle, gear, and profession effects.
Legendary Fish
Legendary Fish are high-difficulty catches.
- They can only be caught once per save file, or once per player in Multiplayer.
- Food buffs, the right rod, and tackle such as Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber help a lot.
- They appear with special crown visuals during the minigame.
Targeted fishing tricks
Some fishing spots are much more efficient than others for specific catch goals.
- Training Rod setups can be used to target rare jelly fish more efficiently in very specific locations.
- Bubble spots and Fish Frenzies can concentrate the available catch pool and improve odds.
Crab Pots and sea-life tips
- Crab Pot catches are easy sources of low-value fish and shellfish.
- They are good for converting into fertilizer, Sashimi, or experience.
- Baited Crab Pots are easier to manage because they cannot be picked up accidentally.
- Some shellfish and crab pot items can also be found by foraging or monster drops, but those do not count the same way as pot catches.
Gifts and friendship tips
Gift limits
You can give each villager one gift per day and up to two gifts per week.
- Birthday gifts are always allowed even if you already gave two weekly gifts.
- Spouses can receive one gift every day.
- Weekly gift bonuses are applied on Sunday morning.
Gift quality
Quality matters for many liked and loved gifts.
- Better quality generally gives more friendship points.
- Birthday and special events multiply gift friendship gains.
Easy universal likes
Many categories are broadly liked by villagers.
- Artisan Goods
- Cooking
- Flowers
- Gems
- Vegetables
- Fruit Tree Fruits
These categories contain notable exceptions, so check the specific item before gifting.
Social and achievement tips
- The Social tab shows hearts, gift history, and learned preferences.
- Achievements can unlock hats and other rewards.
- Some missed achievements are retroactively granted after doing a related action later.
- If a reward or trophy fails to unlock correctly, performing the related action again often triggers it.
Inventory and shop shortcuts
- Shift-click helps move items, buy faster, and craft in larger batches.
- Right-click can split stacks.
- Holding Shift while buying or crafting speeds up repetitive actions.
- Holding the interaction button over processing machines lets you collect or refill many quickly.
Deconstructor tricks can be used to turn certain shop items into cheaper resource components.
Combat and Mines support
- Daily luck affects mining, treasure chances, ladder discovery, and other mine outcomes.
- Luck buffs stack differently from daily luck and affect a related but not identical set of events.
- The Mines can become dangerous through quest states or shrine effects, increasing enemy pressure and some reward rates.
Completion-minded play
If you are aiming for long-term progress, focus on systems that feed multiple goals at once:
- Ship one of everything.
- Raise friendship with villagers steadily.
- Build and upgrade farm infrastructure.
- Use the Greenhouse and processing machines for passive value.
- Spend winter on upgrades, mining, fishing, and friendship instead of trying to force crop production.
