Pale Ale is a crafted artisan good made from Hops and sold as a high-value beverage. It is also used in a few late-game activities, including aging in Casks, tailoring, dyeing, and a special quest. Like other alcoholic goods, it can be a useful product to stockpile once a steady source of Hops is available.
Pale Ale can be placed inside a Cask to improve its quality over time. As it ages, it moves from normal quality to silver, then gold, and finally iridium quality. Iridium quality doubles the item’s base sell price. The aging process can be stopped early at any time for normal, silver, or gold quality Pale Ale by hitting the Cask with an Axe, Hoe, or Pickaxe. The aging times are:
Silver quality: 9 days
Gold quality: 17 days total
8 additional days after silver
Iridium quality: 34 days total
17 additional days after gold
Pale Ale is also one of the available items for a bundle, making it relevant beyond direct selling and gifting. It can be used in the Sewing Machine to create the Black Leather Jacket. In dyeing, it acts as a yellow dye at the dye pots in Emily’s and Haley’s house at 2 Willow Lane.
A notable quest uses Pale Ale as well: Pam requests one by mail on the 14th of Summer during the “Pam Is Thirsty” quest. Completing the request rewards the player with money and 1 Friendship heart, making it a straightforward early quest payoff if a spare Pale Ale is on hand.
In practice, Pale Ale is most valuable when treated as both a profit item and a utility item. Players who produce Hops regularly can choose between immediate sale and aging in a Cask for a higher return. It is especially useful to save at least one copy for tailoring or dyeing if those systems are part of the player’s current goals, and another copy can be worth keeping for Pam’s request.
