Shane is a villager who lives at Marnie’s Ranch in Pelican Town and is one of the twelve marriage candidates. He works at JojaMart most days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM unless the Community Center has been completed, and he usually spends his evenings at the Stardrop Saloon. In the Social Status menu, his outfit changes to a Joja Corporation uniform while he is working at JojaMart.
He lives with his aunt Marnie and his goddaughter Jas, and Morris is his manager at JojaMart. Shane starts out rude and distant, but his dialogue becomes progressively friendlier as his friendship level increases. At 3 hearts he sends the player the Pepper Poppers recipe in the mail, and at 7 hearts he sends the Strange Bun recipe. At any friendship level above zero, he may also send a gift in the mail, with the chance increasing as friendship rises.
Shane’s schedule changes depending on the Community Center, weather, and special events. If the Community Center is not restored, he works at JojaMart on rainy weekdays and also on rainy Saturdays or Sundays, then goes straight to the saloon afterward. Once the Community Center is restored, he no longer works at JojaMart and instead follows a more relaxed routine between Marnie’s Ranch, Pierre’s General Store on Saturdays, and the Stardrop Saloon in the evenings. After the Beach Resort on Ginger Island is unlocked, he may randomly spend the day there, but he never visits on festival days. On Green Rain in Year 1, he stays in the kitchen all day.
Shane is generally easy to please with gifts if you know his tastes. His universally loved gifts are Beer, Hot Pepper, Pepper Poppers, and Pizza. He also likes all universal likes except Pickles, as well as all eggs except Void Egg and all fruit except Hot Pepper. He is neutral toward all universal neutrals and all milk, and he dislikes a long list of forage, fish, and other common items such as Chanterelle, Daffodil, Dandelion, Ginger, Leek, Seaweed, and Winter Root. He hates all universal hates except Seaweed and Strange Bun, plus Pickles and Quartz. In movie theater concessions, he loves It Howls In The Rain and Wumbus, likes several other films, and loves snacks such as Joja Cola, JojaCorn, Nachos, and Stardrop Sorbet, while disliking items like Black Licorice, Cappuccino Mousse Cake, and Truffle Popcorn.
During the Flower Dance, Shane will dance with Emily if neither of them is dancing with the player. Once married, he moves into the farmhouse and adds his own room to the right of the bedroom. He also sets up a small chicken coop behind the farmhouse and may visit his chicken, Charlie. On rainy days he may give the player Beer, Large Egg, Pale Ale, Void Egg, or Pepper Poppers, and on days spent indoors all day he may offer Omelet, Pepper Poppers, or Pizza. After marriage, he can also be found visiting Jas in the forest, shopping at Pierre’s, or spending Friday nights at the saloon under certain conditions.
A few details define Shane’s character beyond his routine. He is depicted as a heavy drinker who struggles with depression, and his original shirt appears to have been based on a Seattle Sounders soccer jersey. Even after befriending him, he remains unusually short compared to the other male sprites in the Flower Dance cutscene, and he is one of the few characters whose development includes a visibly changing relationship to JojaMart and to life after the Community Center route is completed.
