Overview

The Dwarf is a villager who lives in the Mines, just east of the entrance. At first, the path to the cave is blocked by an unbreakable rock. Once the player upgrades to at least a steel pickaxe, the rock can be broken, and a cherry bomb or stronger bomb will also clear it. Unlike most villagers, the Dwarf begins the game speaking Dwarvish, which cannot be understood until the player collects the four Dwarvish Scrolls from the Mines, donates them to the museum, and receives the Dwarvish Translation Guide from Gunther. Until then, the Dwarf’s shop cannot be used and friendship cannot be built.

The Dwarf does not move from this spot and can always be found in the same area near the Mines entrance. Their dialogue reflects a long conflict between the dwarves and the shadow people, and they can be suspicious of the player at first, while also showing respect for the Wizard. The Dwarf also dislikes Krobus because of that ancient war, which left the dwarves reduced to relics found as artifacts.

The Dwarf’s shop sells a useful mix of survival items, explosives, and furniture/recipes, including Dwarvish Safety Manual, Big Stone Chest recipe, Life Elixir, Oil of Garlic, Cherry Bomb, Bomb, Mega Bomb, Miner’s Treat, Rarecrow #6, Stone Cairn, and Weathered Floor recipe. This makes the Dwarf especially useful for players spending time in the Mines or preparing for deep-dungeon runs.

Gift preferences are broad and easy to use once Dwarvish has been translated. The Dwarf loves all universal loved items and also specifically loves Aquamarine, Emerald, Jade, Lava Eel, Lemon Stone, Omni Geode, Ruby, and Topaz. The Dwarf likes all universal liked items, all artifacts, Cave Carrot, and Quartz. Neutral gifts include all universal neutrals, all fruit except Fruit Tree fruit and Salmonberry, all milk, Solar Essence, and Void Essence. The Dwarf dislikes all universal dislikes except the listed exceptions, along with all eggs, and hates all universal hates.

The Dwarf also has unique movie concession preferences: they love Rock Candy and Stardrop Sorbet, like Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie, and dislike everything else. Some of the Dwarf’s dialogue changes with milestones and events, including friendship thresholds, rain, Green Rain, reaching the bottom of the Mines, arriving at Ginger Island North or the Volcano Caldera, and catching certain fish such as Stonefish, Ice Pip, and Lava Eel.

  • The Dwarf’s in-game gender is marked as undefined in the game data.
  • The Dwarf is one of the few villagers permanently tied to a single indoor location.
  • Because the shop inventory includes bombs and utility items, the Dwarf is especially valuable early for players who focus on mining.
