Overview

The Pickaxe is one of the player’s starting tools and is primarily used for breaking stones, ore nodes, and other breakable objects. It is one of the core tools for Mining progression, but it also has several utility uses outside the Mines.

Besides breaking rocks, the Pickaxe can be used to remove certain placed objects and clear small obstacles. It can pick up items such as floor tiles, sprinklers, and artisan equipment, and it can also strike small plants like weeds or other crops on the farm to remove them. Unlike the Axe, the Pickaxe removes placed objects and floor tiles in two steps: the first hit removes anything sitting on the tile while leaving the tile itself intact, and the second hit un-tills the tile or removes the floor state. This same two-stage behavior also applies to items placed on top of floor tiles.

The Pickaxe is also the only tool that can un-till soil after it has been hoed. The first strike removes crops growing there while leaving the tilled soil and any fertilizer in place; the second strike returns the tile to an un-tilled state and removes fertilizer. In combat, the Pickaxe can deal a small amount of damage to monsters, and hitting a Crab five times with it will knock off its shell and make it flee.

The Pickaxe can be upgraded at the Blacksmith. Each upgrade lowers the number of hits needed to break rocks and nodes, and unlocks the ability to break harder materials.

  • Starter Pickaxe: can break small rocks anywhere, break tougher rocks on Mines floors 1–39 in 2 hits, and break Copper Nodes in 3 hits. It cannot break boulders on the Farm.
  • Copper Pickaxe: breaks all rocks on Mines floors 1–39 in 1 hit and floors 40–79 in 2 hits; breaks Copper Nodes in 2 hits.
  • Steel Pickaxe: required to break Farm boulders. It breaks floors 40–79 rocks in 1 hit, Quarry Mine rocks in 2 hits, Copper Nodes in 1 hit, Iron Nodes in 2 hits, Gold Nodes in 3 hits, and Iridium Nodes in 6 hits. It can also break the barrier in the Mines that blocks access to the Dwarf.
  • Gold Pickaxe: can break meteorites. It breaks Mines floors 80–120 rocks in 1 hit, Copper and Iron Nodes in 1 hit, Gold Nodes in 2 hits, and Iridium Nodes in 4 hits. It can break Quarry Mine boulders in 4 hits.
  • Iridium Pickaxe: breaks rocks in the Quarry Mine and Skull Cavern in 1 hit, breaks Diamond Nodes in 2 hits, and all other gem nodes in 1 hit. It can break Quarry Mine boulders in 3 hits.

The Pickaxe’s energy cost is tied to proficiency.
