Strange Bun is a cooked dish that can be prepared using the kitchen in an upgraded farmhouse or a Cookout Kit. It sells for 225g and has an edibility of 40, making it a decent food item in terms of energy restoration. Despite its odd appearance and name, it is fully usable like other cooked dishes and can be obtained through several sources rather than crafting alone.
Strange Bun can appear as random stock in Krobus' shop on Saturdays, in the Stardrop Saloon's rotating stock, or in the Garbage Can outside the Saloon. It may also show up at the Traveling Cart, be dropped by a Shadow Brute with a 4% chance, or be found in a Mystery Box. If Krobus is the player's roommate, he may also give one as a morning gift. Because of these multiple acquisition methods, players can sometimes obtain Strange Bun long before they have a reliable cooking setup.
Its most notable gameplay use is at the Dark Shrine of Night Terrors in the Witch's Hut. Offering a Strange Bun there toggles monster spawning on or off on the farm, making the item important for players who want to control farm combat. This gives Strange Bun a unique role beyond food value, since it directly affects daily farm safety and the presence of monsters.
Strange Bun is also used in tailoring. Placing it in the spool of the Sewing Machine creates the dyeable Heart Shirt, and it can additionally serve as a red dye ingredient in the dye pots at Emily and Haley's house at 2 Willow Lane. These uses make it relevant for players pursuing clothing customization or dye recipes.
A further secret use exists in Vincent's room at 1 Willow Lane: placing a Strange Bun in the toy chest there rewards the player with the Foroguemon statue. This gives the item an additional one-off purpose that is easy to miss if the player only thinks of it as food.
Shane sends the recipe for Strange Bun, but he is neutral toward it as a gift.
Because it can be found from shops, monsters, boxes, and gifts, it is one of the more flexible cooked dishes to obtain.
Its shrine use makes it worth saving at least one copy even if the player does not plan to eat it.
