A common ore that can be smelted into bars.

Overview

Copper Ore is a resource item obtained primarily by mining Copper Nodes in the early game, though it can appear through several other sources as well. It is one of the first ores players commonly stockpile, since it is needed for furnace progression, early combat-oriented crafting, and a number of side uses.

The most reliable source is the Mines, especially Floors 2–39, where Copper Nodes are concentrated and the surrounding rocks also have a chance to drop a single ore. Copper Nodes can also appear in the Quarry, the Quarry Mine, the quarry areas on Hill-top and Four Corners Farm, and on any floor of the Skull Cavern and Volcano Dungeon. Copper Ore may also be found in breakable crates and barrels in the Mines, by tilling soil in the Mines, from Metal Heads on Floors 80–119, from Copper Slimes in the Quarry Mine or random Mine floors, and inside any of the four types of Geode. Other sources include Fishing Treasure Chests, the garbage can outside the Blacksmith, panning, digging up Artifact Spots in several outdoor areas, and occasional stock from the Traveling Cart. A Stonefish Fish Pond can also produce 5 Copper Ore when the population reaches 3, and Clint sells it at the Desert Festival for Calico Eggs.

Copper Ore is smelted in a Furnace to make Copper Bars. The process requires 5 Copper Ore and 1 Coal and takes 30 in-game minutes. This makes it a key bottleneck resource for upgrading tools and advancing into more efficient metal production. The Furnace recipe itself is unlocked from Clint after collecting at least 1 Copper Ore, and the next morning Clint will visit to give the blueprint as part of the “Forging Ahead” quest.

It is also used in a few other systems:

  • In crafting, Copper Ore is one of the ingredients for a Cherry Bomb.
  • It can be placed in the Sewing Machine spool to create the dyeable Turtleneck Sweater.
  • It serves as an orange dye item in the dye pots at Emily’s and Haley’s house.
  • Clint may request Copper Ore in random Help Wanted gathering quests.
  • Stonefish Fish Pond quests request Copper Ore to raise the pond’s capacity from 1 to 3, with 10 Copper Ore required.

Because Copper Ore is so common in the early Mines and has multiple repeatable uses, it is usually worth keeping a reserve rather than smelting everything immediately. Players often need a steady supply for early crafting, the Furnace chain, and quest completion, so mining a batch of ore while progressing through the early floors is usually efficient.
