Coral

Coral is a forageable item found year-round in the Tide Pool area of the Beach, in the southwest area of Ginger Island West, and in The Mines after activating the Shrine of Challenge or during the Danger In The Deep quest. During Summer 12-14, additional Coral appears anywhere on the beach, including the western section. In the Tide Pool section of the Beach, Coral has an average spawn rate of 0.93 per day; during Summer 12-14, about 3.2 additional Coral per day appear on average. These spawns are not limited by the usual six-item forage cap on the map. Picking up Coral grants 7 Foraging XP, and all Foraging bonuses apply.

Coral also has several other uses beyond foraging. It can sometimes be produced by certain Crab Pot fish when placed in a Fish Pond once the pond population reaches 5, and a fully friendship-maxed pet turtle can gift Coral as well. A Coral Fish Pond starts with a capacity of 10, does not require any quests to increase its capacity, and reproduces every 2 days. Unlike most Fish Ponds, it does not produce Roe; instead, once the population reaches 9, it can produce Dolomite and Limestone.

• Ten Coral are required to purchase the Water Obelisk from the Wizard's Tower.
• Coral can be used on the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable Strapped Top.
• Coral can be used as a red dye in the dye pots at Emily's and Haley's house, 2 Willow Lane.
• Several fish pond quests may request 1-3 Coral.
• The Raccoon at the Giant Stump may request 4 Coral as part of his fifth request, or any request starting with the sixth.

Because Coral is a forage item, it is a useful target when visiting the Beach in general, especially during the summer beach bonus days. Its year-round availability, low-effort collection in the Tide Pool, and multiple secondary uses make it more valuable than its simple appearance suggests.
