Halibut

The Halibut is a fish that can be caught in the ocean at The Beach or on the Beach Farm during Spring, Summer, and Winter. It can also be caught at any time of day or season with Magic Bait. Outside of fishing, it may randomly appear in Krobus' shop on Wednesdays or at the Traveling Cart.

Halibut has a few useful secondary uses. It can be placed in a Fish Pond, where it reproduces every 3 days. A new pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be expanded to 10 through three quests. The pond’s only output is light gray Halibut Roe, and the pond quests grant 35 Fishing XP each. The required items are:

• To raise capacity from 3 to 5: 3 Driftwood, 1 Frozen Geode, or 1-2 Seaweed
• To raise capacity from 5 to 7: 2 Clams or 2 Coral
• To raise capacity from 7 to 10: 2 Aquamarine, 1 Mussel, or 2 Sea Urchins

In the Sewing Machine, Halibut can be used in the spool to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt.

For fish pond production, a Halibut pond produces Halibut Roe with a 70% chance each day when the population is 1-4, and a 100% chance when the population is 5-10. That translates to an overall daily chance of 16-33% at low population and 55-95% at high population, with the remainder being a chance of producing nothing. Each Roe production grants 12 Fishing XP.

Halibut is also requested in the Special Orders quest Aquatic Overpopulation. Demetrius may ask for 10 Halibut caught in Spring from the Special Orders board outside the Mayor's Manor, and the reward is gold equal to the selling value of the fish plus the Farm Computer recipe.

Because Halibut can be caught in multiple seasons and has both crafting and fish pond applications, it is a fairly flexible fish to keep on hand if you want dyeing materials, pond income, or quest completion.
