Lionfish

Overview
Lionfish is a fish that can be caught on Ginger Island during any season. It appears in the ocean waters at Island West, South, and Southeast, making it one of the island’s permanent catches rather than a seasonal or weather-limited fish. Because it is available year-round, it is useful both for fishing progress and for island-specific requests.
The Island Trader sells 1 Tropical Chair for 1 Lionfish on even-numbered days of the season, so keeping a spare Lionfish can be worthwhile if you want that furniture item. Lionfish is also requested in the “Tropical Fish” special order, where
Lionfish can be used in several processing and crafting systems:
- It can be placed in a
Fish Pond. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be expanded to 10 by completing two quests.
- The pond’s primary output is orange Lionfish Roe.
- Once the population reaches 4 or higher, additional items can begin to appear as possible pond outputs.
- In the
Sewing Machine, Lionfish can be used in the spool to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt.
- It can also be used as orange dye at the dye pots in
Emily and
Haley’s house.
In a Fish Pond, Lionfish reproduce every 3 days. The pond quests required to expand capacity are straightforward island-fish requests: going from 3 to 5 capacity requires 3

For pond production, Lionfish is most consistent at low populations, where roe is guaranteed. As the population grows, the chance of producing roe remains high, but there is a growing chance of secondary items. At very high population, the pond can even produce a small chance of nothing, though that does not prevent roe from remaining the standard output overall. This makes Lionfish a practical pond fish if you want steady roe production with occasional bonus island-themed rewards.
Because Lionfish is found only on Ginger Island, players usually encounter it after island access is unlocked. Its combination of permanent availability, fish pond usefulness, dye potential, and special-order demand makes it one of the more versatile island fish to keep on hand.
