Overview

The Angler is a fish that can be caught in Pelican Town during Fall. It is one of the five Legendary Fish, so it can normally be caught only once per save file, or once per player in multiplayer. It appears in the river north of JojaMart, and is tied to the northernmost end of the river rather than to a specific casting distance from shore.

To hook an Angler, the player must meet several conditions at the same time:

  • Fishing level 3 or higher, either naturally or through Fishing buffs
  • Standing at the northernmost end of the river, within 15 tiles of the map edge
  • A valid standing spot can include the wooden plank bridge, the shoreline north of the bridge, and the shoreline up to three tiles south of the wooden bridge
  • The bobber may land anywhere in the river, as long as the player is standing in a valid location

When these requirements are met, each cast has a 20% chance to hook an Angler, increased to 25% with a Curiosity Lure. Although it cannot be hooked again after being caught normally, additional Anglers can still be obtained per player by using Challenge Bait, by panning in the correct tiles with the Fisher enchantment, or by using Magic Bait to catch it regardless of season.

Like other fish, the Angler can be placed in a Fish Pond, but its pond capacity is fixed at 1 and cannot be increased. The only possible output from the pond is Angler Roe. At population 1, the pond produces a 30 Fishing XP reward when it yields fish, with a 75% chance to produce that item and a 25% chance to produce nothing, for an overall daily chance of 37.5% to gain Angler Roe.

The Angler also has a dye use: it can serve as a yellow dye in the dye pots at Emily and Haley's house, 2 Willow Lane. Because it is a Legendary Fish, it is often treated as a trophy catch as much as a practical resource, but its fish pond and dye uses give it a few extra applications after the first catch.
