Chub

The Chub is a fish that can be caught in the mountain lake and the Cindersap Forest River during all seasons. Unlike most fish found in the Forest River, it cannot be caught in Pelican Town. It may also be gifted by a pet cat with max friendship, and it can sometimes appear in Krobus’ shop on Wednesdays or at the Traveling Cart.

Chub are also used in several progression and crafting systems. They can be placed in a Fish Pond, where they reproduce every 2 days. A newly built pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish, and the capacity can be increased to 10 by completing three pond quests. The pond’s only possible produce is dark gray Chub Roe.

When a Chub is placed in a Fish Pond, the quest requirements for expanding the pond are:

• From 3 to 5 fish: 3 Acorns, 10 Bug Meat, 3 Maple Seeds, or 3 Pine Cones
• From 5 to 7 fish: 3 Gold Ore, 1 Maple Syrup, or 5 Mixed Seeds
• From 7 to 10 fish: 1 Crayfish, 1 Honey, 2 Jade, or 1 Periwinkle

Each of these quests grants 30 Fishing XP. A Chub Fish Pond produces Roe most days, with a 90% chance to produce dark gray Chub Roe and a 10% chance to produce nothing.

Chub also have a few other uses outside of the pond. They can be requested by Willy on the Help Wanted board outside Stone’s General Store during any season, in a quantity of 1 to 4, for a reward per fish while allowing you to keep the fish. In addition, two Chub may be requested in a Fish Pond quest by Dorado, Lingcod, or Pike to raise a pond from 3 to 5 capacity.

Other practical uses include tailoring: Chub can be placed in the spool of the Sewing Machine to create the Fishing Vest.

Because Chub are available in both the mountain lake and the Cindersap Forest River, they are one of the more accessible fish for players who want Fish Pond material, a tailoring ingredient, or a flexible fish to keep on hand for quests. Their broad seasonal availability and multiple utility roles make them a useful catch even though they are not tied to any one unique location or season.
