Overview

A Geode is a mineral deposit that can be broken open for minerals, artifacts, ores, or other basic resources. It is one of the most common collectible breakables in Stardew Valley and is found primarily by breaking rocks above ground and in the Mines, especially on floors 1–39. Geodes can also be dropped by Duggies, found in Fishing Treasure Chests, taken from the Garbage Can outside the Museum, received as a gift at the Feast of the Winter Star, or obtained by pickaxing Geode Nodes. A Stonefish Fish Pond can also produce Geodes once its population reaches 9. On the Beach Farm, 2–4 Geodes may occasionally appear in Supply Crates if the Farmhouse has not yet been upgraded. Geodes cannot be obtained from breaking rocks on Spring 1 of Year 1.

Geodes can be opened by Clint at the Blacksmith or processed with a Geode Crusher. Their contents are fixed when the Geode is created, and neither daily luck nor luck buffs affect what comes out. Most Geode contents follow the same general drop structure: items other than clay and stone are obtained in batches of 1, 3, 5, 10, or 20, with probabilities of 30%, 30%, 30%, 9%, and 1% respectively. Stone is different, with a 50% chance to use those batch values and a 50% chance to give only 1. Clay is limited to 1 per Geode.

Possible Geode rewards include a mix of minerals, artifacts, ores, and resources. Geode Minerals each have a 1/32 chance to appear, including Alamite, Calcite, Celestine, Granite, Jagoite, Jamborite, Limestone, Malachite, Mudstone, Nekoite, Orpiment, Petrified Slime, Sandstone, Slate, and Thunder Egg. Other notable results include Dwarvish Helm at 1/32, Earth Crystal at 1/16, and resource drops such as Stone, Clay, Coal, Copper Ore, and Iron Ore. Iron Ore only becomes possible from Geodes after reaching level 26 of the Mines; before that point, any Geode that would contain iron ore instead yields Copper Ore.

Geodes also have a few practical uses outside of simply being opened. They are used in the Sewing Machine spool to create the Gray Hoodie, and they can be used as orange dye in the dye pots at Emily and Haley’s house. In Fish Pond and Raccoon requests, they may be asked for in quantity: Sunfish may request 2 Geodes to raise a pond’s capacity from 3 to 5, Stonefish may request 5 Geodes to raise capacity from 5 to 7, and the Raccoon may ask for 8 Geodes as part of his fifth request or any request from the sixth onward.

Because Geodes are so common, it is often efficient to save them up and open them in batches rather than carrying them around. Since the contents are predetermined, opening them later does not improve the result, but using a Geode Crusher can be convenient if you want to avoid paying Clint’s fee or if you want to process them in bulk.
