Goby

Goby is a fish that can be caught at the bottom of the waterfalls in southern Cindersap Forest during any season. The fishing spot is just east of the Abandoned House, in the waterfall pools at the edge of the map. Although the pool looks close, it is actually 5 tiles away on the map grid, so an effective Fishing level of at least 4 is needed to cast into it.

When fishing in the correct area without a Training Rod, Goby has a 15% chance to be hooked. Using a Curiosity Lure raises that to 30%. Goby Bait works differently from most fish bait: instead of multiplying location chance by 1.66, it adds a flat 20% chance, bringing the hook chance to 35–46%. These effects stack, so using both a Curiosity Lure and Goby Bait gives a 50–61% chance to hook a Goby.

Goby can be placed in a Fish Pond, where it reproduces every 4 days. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be expanded to 10 by completing three quests. Its only possible pond output is orange Goby Roe. The pond quests award 40 Fishing XP each and ask for items such as acorns, bug meat, maple seeds, pine cones, gold ore, maple syrup, mixed seeds, crayfish, honey, jade, or periwinkle as the population increases.

• At populations from 1 to 10, the pond has a 90% chance to produce Goby Roe and a 10% chance to produce nothing each day.
• Goby Roe is the only output, so the pond is simple compared to fish ponds with multiple product types.
• The fish can be used in tailoring to create a Fish Shirt in the Sewing Machine.
• It can also be used as dye: it acts as orange dye at the dye pots in Emily’s and Haley’s house, and as brown dye in the Sewing Machine when combined with a dyeable clothing item.

One notable quirk is that Goby’s theoretical maximum size is 13", but in actual gameplay it cannot be caught larger than 11" because of the limited fishing spot size. Catching an 11" Goby requires a Fishing level of at least 16.
