Midnight Squid

The Midnight Squid is a fish that can be caught during the Night Market at the Beach, specifically from the submarine ride available on Winter 15–17. It can also be caught outside the submarine using Magic Bait in the southwest corner of the beach, and this method ignores time of day and season. In the submarine ride, the catch chance is 21% normally, or 17% with a Curiosity Lure. With Magic Bait in the southwest beach spot, the catch chance is 3.3% normally, or 10.2% with a Curiosity Lure.

Because the submarine pond is small and limits how far from land the fish can be hooked, the Midnight Squid can only be caught at its maximum size of 26" when fishing on the Beach with Magic Bait. This makes the beach method useful not only for bypassing the Night Market schedule, but also for obtaining a max-size specimen.

When placed in a Fish Pond, Midnight Squid reproduce every 3 days and start with a capacity of 3 fish, which can be increased to 10 by completing three pond quests. Unlike most fish ponds, it produces Squid Ink instead of Roe. The pond quest items are 3 Coral or 2 Sea Urchins to increase capacity from 3 to 5, 2 Sardines to increase it from 5 to 8, and 1 Ocean Stone to increase it from 8 to 10. Each of these quests grants 35 Fishing XP.

Its pond production is centered on Squid Ink, with output chances improving as the population grows. At lower populations the pond often produces nothing, while at higher populations it becomes much more reliable:

• At population 1–2, Squid Ink is produced 20% of the time, and nothing 80% of the time.
• At 3–4, Squid Ink is produced 56% of the time.
• At 5–6, Squid Ink is produced 82% of the time.
• At 7–9, Squid Ink is produced 96% of the time.
• At 10, the pond can produce Squid Ink or nothing, with Squid Ink appearing 25% of the time in one result tier and 72% in another listed tier.

Midnight Squid also has a small connection to treasure fishing: Midnight Squid Roe can be found in Fishing Treasure Chests after obtaining the power from the Jewels Of The Sea book.

It is not used in any bundles or quests. For tailoring, it can be used in the Sewing Machine spool, and it can also serve as a blue dye in dye pots at Emily and Haley’s house.
