Tuna

Tuna is a fish that can be caught in the ocean at The Beach or on the Beach Farm during Summer and Winter. It can also be caught on Ginger Island in any season at Island West (ocean), South, Southeast, and in the Pirate Cove. During Summer or Winter, it may also appear in Garbage Cans, and it can sometimes be sold by the Traveling Cart. Tuna can be caught at any time of day and in any season when using Magic Bait.

Tuna is used in the Specialty Fish Bundle, and a gold or iridium quality Tuna is required for the Quality Fish Bundle. It can also be used in the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt.

A Tuna can be placed in a Fish Pond, where it reproduces every 3 days. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be expanded to 10 by completing the pond quests. Tuna ponds produce blue Tuna Roe and nothing else. The required quest items are:

• From 3 to 5 capacity: 3 Driftwood, 1 Frozen Geode, or 1-2 Seaweed
• From 5 to 7 capacity: 2 Clams or 2 Coral
• From 7 to 10 capacity: 2 Aquamarine, 1 Mussel, or 2 Sea Urchins

The pond also grants 35 Fishing XP when each quest is completed. At higher populations, the pond’s daily production becomes more reliable, with a Tuna pond at 5-10 fish having a chance to produce roe on most days.

Tuna can also appear in Help Wanted and Special Orders quests. During Summer or Winter, one Tuna may be requested on the Help Wanted board for a reward of gold and 150 Friendship points. Demetrius or Willy may request 1-4 Tuna for a catch quest during Summer or Winter, with payment per fish, and the player keeps the fish. Demetrius may also request 10 Tuna in Summer for the Aquatic Overpopulation Special Order, which rewards gold equal to the selling value of the fish and the Farm Computer recipe.

Because Tuna is available in both Summer and Winter, it is one of the more flexible ocean fish to stockpile for bundles, tailoring, quests, and fish ponds. Its Ginger Island availability also makes it easy to catch outside the normal seasonal window, especially if Magic Bait is available.
