Prismatic Shard

The Prismatic Shard is a Mineral and one of the rarest items in the game. Despite its rarity, it has many important uses, ranging from unlocking powerful weapons to completing late-game quests and special crafting options.

A Prismatic Shard is required to obtain the Galaxy Sword in the Desert, where the player can stand among the three pillars to reveal it. It is also one of the items that can complete the Missing Bundle, helping unlock the Movie Theater. Other uses include offering it to the Dark Shrine of Selfishness in the Witch's Hut to turn children into doves, placing one in a Junimo Hut to make the Junimos cycle through rainbow colors, donating one to Gunther at the Museum, and using it in the Sewing Machine to create prismatic clothing. In multiplayer, it can also be used to craft a Wedding Ring, and on Thursdays the Desert Trader sells 1 Magic Rock Candy for 3 Prismatic Shards. Prismatic Shards are also used to enchant tools in the Forge.

It can be gifted as a universally loved gift to everyone except Haley, making it one of the most valuable gift items in the game. Mr. Qi's Four Precious Stones quest also requests 4 Prismatic Shards.

Prismatic Shards can be found from many very rare sources:

• 25% chance from a Mystic Stone in the Mines at floor 100+; also in Skull Cavern, Quarry, and Volcano Dungeon
• 25% chance from a meteorite
• 1/26 chance from a treasure room in Skull Cavern
• 3.5% chance from an Iridium Node in Skull Cavern, Quarry, and Volcano Dungeon
• 0.4% chance from an Omni Geode
• 0.4% chance from a Mystery Box
• 0.1% chance from Serpents and Mummies, and 0.05% from Shadow Brutes and Shadow Shaman, including dangerous variants
• 0.1% chance from Wilderness Golems and Iridium Golems after reaching Combat Level 10
• 0.79% chance from a Golden Mystery Box
• 0.09% daily chance from a Rainbow Trout Fish Pond with a population of at least 9
• 0.05% chance from any monster after reaching the bottom of the Mines
• about 0.012% chance from a Fishing Treasure Chest after reaching Fishing level 6
• one guaranteed chest in the top of the Volcano Dungeon the first time the player arrives there
• once per day from the Statue Of True Perfection
• purchased from Emily for Calico Eggs during the Desert Festival shop
• from the Blessing Of The Butterfly, up to a 17.5% chance

Prismatic Slimes can also be a source of Prismatic Shards indirectly through the quest for Prismatic Jelly, but their behavior can be unusual. If a Prismatic Slime becomes a special slime, it drops one special item instead of the intended Prismatic Jelly. When killed while wearing the Burglar's Ring, it drops two Prismatic Jellies. In the Quarry Mine, because the floor resets at the end of the day rather than when leaving, a spawned Prismatic Slime can remain available for the rest of the day even after leaving and returning later.

A Prismatic Shard cannot be duplicated in a Crystalarium. The Lost Book Technology Report! explains this by noting that the shard’s electromagnetic field interacts negatively with the machine.
