Overview

The Stingray is a fish that can be caught in the Pirate Cove on the southeast side of Ginger Island. It is one of the island fish available after unlocking Ginger Island, and it has several uses beyond being sold or donated.

Stingrays are especially notable for their Island Trader exchange: 1 Stingray can be traded for Mahogany Seeds. This makes them useful to keep on hand even if their direct sell value is not the main reason to catch them. Willy can also request 5 Stingray for the Special Orders board outside the Mayor’s Manor as part of the Tropical Fish special order.

Stingray has a few crafting and tailoring uses as well. It can be placed in the spool of the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable Sailor Shirt. It can also be used as an orange dye ingredient at the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s house.

A Fish Pond can hold Stingrays, and they reproduce every 4 days. The pond starts with a capacity of 3 fish and can be upgraded to 10 by completing two pond quests. The pond’s main product is dark brown Stingray Roe, but additional items become possible once the population grows.

  • At a capacity increase from 3 to 5, the pond quest requires 7 Cinder Shards and grants 40 Fishing XP.
  • At a capacity increase from 5 to 10, the pond quest requires 1 Dragon Tooth and grants 40 Fishing XP.

At lower populations, the pond mostly produces Roe, but the output table changes as the population increases. At population 4 and above, Magma Caps can appear; at population 7 and above, Cinder Shards can appear; and at population 9 and 10, Dragon Teeth and Battery Packs can also be produced. This makes Stingray one of the more valuable fish to keep in a pond if the player wants a steady source of island- and volcano-related materials.

Because Stingray is tied to the Pirate Cove, it fits naturally into Ginger Island progression and island farming. Players looking to maximize its value usually keep at least one for tailoring or dyeing, and may maintain a pond for the additional resources, while using extras for Mahogany Seeds or special order requests.
