Overview

Golden Walnuts are the currency used by the parrots on Ginger Island. A player’s total is shown directly beneath the player name in the Skills tab, and in multiplayer the walnuts are shared among all players in the save. The island contains 130 Golden Walnuts in total, and they are obtained through exploration, farming, fishing, mining, combat, puzzles, quests, and a few special interactions.

The first Golden Walnut the player obtains is always produced by opening the first Golden Coconut. After that, Golden Coconuts can yield a variety of items instead of a walnut, including saplings, seeds, ore, and other rewards. Golden Walnuts are also tied to Ginger Island progression: after collecting 100, Qi’s Walnut Room becomes unlocked, the Queen Of Sauce Cookbook can be purchased from the Bookseller, and the Raccoon may begin rewarding a random unshipped item other than Roe or Artisan Goods starting with the sixth request.

Walnuts can be traded to parrots for island upgrades and access. A total of 116 walnuts is required to unlock all regular rewards, with the remaining 14 convertible into 28 Qi Gems after everything else has been purchased. These rewards include access to the north and west sides of the island, the Ginger Island Farmhouse, the Farmhouse Mailbox, the Farm Obelisk, the Island Dig Site, the Island Trader, the Volcano Bridge, the Volcano Exit Shortcut, the Island Resort, and the Parrot Express fast-travel system.

Ways to obtain Golden Walnuts include:

  • Opening Golden Coconuts at Clint’s blacksmith shop, where the first one cracked yields a walnut.
  • Fishing anywhere on Ginger Island, which can produce up to five walnuts total, with each cast having a 15% chance until the cap is reached.
  • Harvesting non-regrowing crops on the Ginger Island farm, which can award up to five walnuts total.
  • Mining Mussel Nodes, which can yield up to five walnuts.
  • Fighting slimes in the Tiger Slime Grove, which can drop one walnut.
  • Solving island puzzles, including the Gem Birds puzzle, the Simon Says cave puzzle, the banana altar gorilla encounter, and several hidden-dig spots.
  • Completing quests such as The Pirate’s Wife, which rewards five walnuts.
  • Reading Journal Scraps and digging at the hinted locations.

The parrot in Leo’s hut gives clues for most remaining walnut locations, and the hints update as walnuts are found. It does not hint at every source, however, and some walnuts must still be discovered through specific actions such as the banana altar, the southern Gem Birds bush, or the darts game rewards. If the player wants to skip searching, the Golden Joja Parrot west of the volcano can be paid to reveal all remaining Golden Walnuts not yet found; the game warns that doing so prevents the “true Ginger Island Experience,” and the walnuts are added after sleeping.

There are also a few practical quirks worth noting. The game can occasionally miscount walnuts, leaving the total at 129/130, and the chat command /recountnuts can fix the count. If the player has already traded extra walnuts for Qi Gems, that same command can restore walnuts above 116, which can be repeated by exchanging them again.
