Increases the chance of finding treasures when fishing. However, fish aren't crazy about the taste.

Overview

The Magnet is a type of bait that is used to increase the chance of finding treasure chests while fishing. It can be crafted, purchased from Willy’s Fish Shop after reaching Fishing level 9, bought from the Casino, found in Golden Fishing Treasure Chests, and sometimes obtained as a reward from other sources such as the Festival of Ice, the Feast of the Winter Star, Krobus’ shop on Wednesdays, and the Traveling Cart.

Although its description says it raises treasure chest chances by 15 percentage points, its real effect is on treasure rather than on bite speed. In practice, the Magnet gives the same fishing bite-rate reduction as standard Bait, cutting biting time by 50%. That means it functions as normal bait while also adding treasure chest support, making it a straightforward upgrade for players who want both faster bites and more loot opportunities.

A few practical details are worth keeping in mind:

  • Magnets cannot be used with the Training Rod or the Bamboo Pole.
  • Only the Fiberglass Rod, the Iridium Rod, and the Advanced Iridium Rod can use bait, including Magnets.
  • Magnets can technically be placed in a Crab Pot, but this provides no real advantage because Crab Pots never produce treasure.
  • Crafting Magnets is usually cheaper than buying them from the Fish Shop, even when the materials are purchased.
  • In early game, 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal are cheaper to obtain by crafting than buying a Magnet outright; this remains true in later years as well.
  • Winning the Casino fishing minigames can also make Magnets effectively free through the Casino shop.

Because treasure chests can contain valuable items, Magnets are especially useful when fishing in areas where treasure is likely to be worth the effort. They are also convenient for players who want to stock up on bait without relying entirely on purchases, since crafted Magnets can be significantly more economical than shop-bought ones.
