Stone Chest

The Stone Chest is a craftable storage item that functions much like the wooden Chest, but it is made from stone and can be placed in many different locations throughout Stardew Valley. It holds up to 36 different item types, with up to 999 identical items stacked into a single slot. Like other chests, it is useful for organizing materials, crops, and tools, and items stored inside do not decompose.

The recipe is obtained by mail after completing the Special Order "Robin's Resource Rush". Once crafted, a Stone Chest can be placed almost anywhere, including outside the farm, though location matters if villagers need to walk through the area. If a Stone Chest is left on a villager’s path, it will be pushed out of the way, so safe placement is important when using them in towns, paths, or other public spaces.

A Stone Chest can also be picked up and returned to inventory, but only when empty. Hitting an empty chest with any tool, or repeatedly with an empty hand, will pick it up. If the chest contains items, it cannot be collected until emptied. However, a filled chest can be nudged around by repeatedly hitting it with an empty hand; tools do not work for pushing. If the target tile is not valid, the chest may shift to the nearest valid space, including behind the player, diagonally adjacent tiles, or even across other placed objects if a legal spot is available.

Stone Chests are also customizable. When opened, they display a color bar above the inventory window, allowing the player to change the chest’s color at any time without cost. There are 20 available colors, and the default setting matches the white color in the picker. This makes Stone Chests especially useful for organizing storage visually, since different chest colors can be assigned to different categories of items.
