Official description

An ornate hood with a pointed crest, worn by marksmen of old, devoted traditions.

Overview

Sniper Cowl is an equippable hood described in-game as an ornate hood with a pointed crest, traditionally worn by marksmen devoted to ancient customs. The item appears as a wearable aesthetic/armor piece dropped from Sniper-type enemies and is tied to that enemy archetype in both flavor and acquisition. Its flavor text across localized builds consistently emphasizes a decorative, pointed crest and its association with skilled, tradition-bound shooters.

Sniper Cowl is obtained as a random drop when harvesting the remains of Sniper enemies. Snipers are first encountered in Manufacturing West, which makes the cowl available at that stage of progression whenever Snipers are present. The cowl does not require Kevlar Scrap to craft, but it can be scrapped into Kevlar Scrap as of patch 1.0.0.20184 Hotfix. This scrapping behavior allows players to access Kevlar Scrap earlier than the Security Sector normally permits.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • Source: harvest Sniper enemy corpses for a chance to receive Sniper Cowl; drop is random.
  • Early Kevlar access: scrapping Sniper Cowl yields Kevlar Scrap despite the cowl not requiring Kevlar Scrap to craft. This provides a means to obtain Kevlar Scrap before the Security Sector is reached.
  • Crafting implications: the early Kevlar Scrap can be used to make items such as Tech Bandages earlier than usual; this is the primary practical benefit of scrapping the cowl.
  • Limitations: many items that use Kevlar Scrap also require additional materials obtainable only in or beyond the Security Sector, so the cowl’s value as a raw-material source is situational and often limited to specific recipes where Kevlar is the sole bottleneck.
  • Location context: because Snipers first appear in Manufacturing West, players aiming to collect Sniper Cowls or to harvest Kevlar Scrap via scrapping should focus on encounters and harvesting opportunities in that sector.
  • Role and flavor: the Sniper Cowl functions mainly as a flavor/visual piece tied to the Sniper enemy class; players who do not need the aesthetic may prefer to scrap it for material value when early Kevlar is useful.

Do not rely on the Sniper Cowl as a steady source of Kevlar Scrap long-term; treat it as a situational early-game resource or collectible with occasional crafting utility.
