Overview

Unknown is a placeholder category used for modules that do not fit into a more specific classification or that are still treated as a general, undefined type. In practice, it serves as the catch-all label when an object is functional but not assigned to a more specialized role.

When used as part of Astroneer’s item categorization, Unknown sits alongside broader groupings such as power, storage, crafting, production, refining, economy, and vehicle modification, but it does not describe a gameplay function of its own. It is primarily a classification aid rather than a distinct in-game system.

Depending on the way an object is being grouped, Unknown may appear in contexts such as:

  • A module with an undefined or general category
  • An item that is functional but not clearly part of a more specific module type
  • A descriptor used in guide-style categorization by assignment or by use

In the broader categorization system, functional objects are divided by how they behave: modules are connectable and disconnectable objects, construction-related modules are specifically level-3 modules made on large platforms or vehicles, widgets are level-1 modules that fit backpack utility slots, deployables work without being attached to a mount point, and tools function only when held by the player or paired with other modules. Unknown does not override those rules; it simply marks something that has not been placed into one of the named categories.

The term is also distinct from resource groupings such as raw, crafted, fuel, or liquid, and from vehicle groupings such as ground vehicles and spaceships. Those are functional classifications tied to game behavior, while Unknown is best understood as an interim or generic label used when a clearer category is unavailable.
