Overview

Terrain Analyzer is an Augment for the Terrain Tool that samples and stores a terrain color. It can be found rarely in Remnants, making it a relatively uncommon utility item rather than a standard early-game unlock. Once attached to the Terrain Tool, it lets the player absorb color from terrain by using the tool on a surface of that color; the analyzer’s bar fills gradually as the tool removes terrain of that exact color.

After the bar is completely filled, that Terrain Analyzer becomes locked to that single color and can no longer learn a different one. From that point on, it can be used to apply the stored color when placing terrain with the Terrain Tool. This makes it useful for matching terrain to a specific biome or for keeping base landscaping visually consistent. Because each planet contains many different terrain colors, players may end up collecting several Terrain Analyzers if they want access to multiple colors.

A Terrain Analyzer also changes how the Terrain Tool behaves in combination with other augments and tool modes:

  • With a locked color equipped, terrain placement and shaping will use that stored color.
  • When paired with the Inhibitor Mod, the Terrain Tool can recolor existing terrain without changing its shape, effectively turning the tool into a painting tool.
  • Using the Inhibitor Mod together with a Terrain Analyzer allows precise color application on already formed surfaces, which is useful around bases and carefully shaped builds.
  • Combining the analyzer with narrower or wider terrain-control settings affects the size of the painted area, allowing either more precise coloring or broader coverage.

In practice, the item is most valuable once the player has settled on a preferred palette and wants to reproduce it reliably. It is also the only way to paint terrain directly while preventing additional deformation when used with the Inhibitor Mod, which gives the player much finer control over the look of the landscape.
