Overview

The Research Chamber is a base module used to extract Bytes from research items and resources. It is one of the main ways to unlock technology in Astroneer, since Bytes are spent in the Research Catalog to purchase schematics. To operate it, place a compatible item into one of its research slots and activate the chamber from the control panel.

The chamber has a medium slot and a small slot, but only one can be used for research at a time because the two slots overlap. When idle, it displays a holographic inverted droplet icon above the slot area. During research, the chamber’s side shields and scanning arms rise and rotate around the item, while a blue holographic beam grows upward from the base. When the process finishes, the beam turns green briefly, then disappears as the chamber returns to its idle state and the researched item is consumed.

Research speed is measured in Bytes per minute. The time required depends on the item itself and on whether the chamber is receiving enough power. Higher-value items generally take longer to research, and if power is insufficient, research duration doubles. The chamber uses 2U/s when operating.

The Research Chamber can process research items, research samples, and resources. It cannot research incompatible items, including all printable items, packaged bundles made with the Packager, and wreckage. If a packaged research item is to be studied, it must be unpacked before being placed in the chamber. When an incompatible item is inserted, the research indicator turns red and remains that way until the item is removed; even so, the slot can still be used as temporary storage when needed.

Useful notes:

  • The chamber is commonly used for mineral, organic, and technological research items, as well as unknown samples dropped by hostile flora.
  • Unknown research items are often found beneath dangerous plants.
  • Mineral research items are the most common type and are found in or around rocky formations.
  • Organic research items are found on or under plants across all planets.
  • Technological research items are found around EXO Dynamics Research Aid sites and satellite wreckage, and they tend to award significantly more Bytes than organic or mineral samples.
  • If the chamber is underpowered, it still functions, but research takes longer.

The Research Chamber is central to early and mid-game progression because it converts exploration finds into technology unlocks. Efficient use of it means keeping a steady power supply and prioritizing high-value research items whenever possible.
