Overview

The Kiln is an early-game production building used to turn basic raw materials into Charcoal and Pottery. It is one of the most important stepping stones in the industrial chain because Charcoal is required for later metalworking, especially for unlocking the Royal Forge. Even if you do not plan to run a Furnace immediately, building a Kiln early makes progression much smoother.

A single Kiln is enough to supply a modest Furnace setup, but once you begin making Pottery as well, having several Kilns in your settlement is recommended. The building has four recipes:

  • 2 Log → 4 Charcoal, work time 600
  • 2 Thorn Log → 5 Charcoal, work time 600
  • 1 Dirt + 1 Water → 3 Pottery, work time 600
  • 1 Mud → 4 Pottery, work time 600

Charcoal made from Logs or Thorn Logs is the Kiln’s main long-term role before Coal becomes available. Once Coal can be used, Kiln-produced Charcoal becomes less important for efficiency, since Coal supports Furnace production more effectively. Even so, keeping some Charcoal in storage remains useful, because special event demands can still require it; one seasonal event can ask for as many as 60 Charcoal.

The Pottery recipes also give the Kiln a second role as a general materials processor. If your city relies on Pottery for construction or production chains, the Kiln becomes a steady early supplier rather than a temporary stopgap. Because both Charcoal and Pottery use the same building, the Kiln is often worth placing sooner than players expect, even before heavy industrial expansion begins.
