builders hut

Overview
Builders' Hut is a basic production building that employs Beavers or Bots as Builders. A Builders' Hut assigns its occupants the Builder job; Builders perform all tasks related to constructing and dismantling the settlement’s environment and buildings. Core duties include carrying Materials to construction sites, performing the actual construction work when a supply milestone is reached, reclaiming Rubble, and demolishing unwanted objects such as Natural Overhangs, Slopes, Blockage, Crops, Trees, and Bushes. When no higher-priority tasks exist, idle Builders remove output from workplaces; if nothing needs clearing they stand in the hut doorway.
Builders operate from a path-connected area and have a fixed reach: they can only work on sites up to 10 tiles away from any path accessible to their district. The in-game preview shows this reach when selecting a Builders' Hut or a District Center. Builders do not need a path directly to a building site entrance as long as there is any accessible route from a pathway within 10 blocks; this allows Builders from other districts to assist with construction if the site sits within their path network. Builders can work on sites that are adjacent, one block above them (except when demolishing), or at any height below the Builder down to the nearest terrain surface; sites covered by terrain cannot be reached from above. Iron Teeth Builders are able to build normally from within Tubeways or Vertical Tubeways.
Construction task distribution is split into two complementary roles. All available Builders in range will haul required Materials to a worksite, while a single Builder is assigned to perform the actual construction for each completion milestone. Typically the first Builder to deliver enough Materials is chosen as the constructor; if not, another available Builder will be assigned. When a worksite falls within the reach of two or more districts, hauling and work tasks are distributed among those districts, but the one-constructor rule still applies.
An important exception applies to Wonders. Multiple Builders can work on a Wonder simultaneously, speeding completion, but Wonders require the worksite to be properly connected to a District Center via a Path or other pathing method. If the Wonder site is not connected through its intended entrance, it is treated as unreachable and no construction will occur.
Practical notes and strategies:
- Place Builders' Huts near the heart of your path network to maximize reach and minimize travel time and exhaustion. Longer travel distances increase the chance Builders suffer from Exhaustion or energy shortages if needs sources are distant.
- Use multiple districts’ path networks to cover large projects: overlapping 10-tile ranges allow cross-district assistance in hauling materials.
- For vertical builds, remember Builders can build one block above them but cannot demolish from above; plan scaffold paths or tubeways accordingly.
- Connect Wonders explicitly to a District Center with a path to allow many Builders to contribute simultaneously.
- Idle Builders clearing workplace output helps keep production lines flowing without manually assigning haulers; do not expect them to perform unrelated hauling far from their reach.
