Overview

Petrified Fossil is one of the four buried fossil-style geodes found in the world, and it is the hot variant of the fossil set. It generates inside a circular geode with two layers: an outer ring of Magma at about 1700°C, and an inner chamber that is mostly filled with Hydrogen Gas at 50°C. The inner geode also contains one small Fossil Fragment, two Fossil tiles, two Diamond tiles, and a Pincha Pepperplant.

Unlike the other fossil remnants, Petrified Fossil is always surrounded by extremely hot Magma, so excavating it carelessly can release a large amount of heat into the surrounding biome. As the outer Magma cools, it often solidifies into Igneous Rock, which can leave behind a significant amount of leftover hot material.

When deciding whether to expose it, the main question is whether the surrounding area is already dug out. If the nearby terrain is still natural and there are no important buildings close by, opening the geode can be useful because the heat will bleed into the surrounding natural tiles. Digging a natural tile destroys 50% of its mass, and that also removes 50% of the heat stored in that tile, which helps reduce the thermal impact of the release.

A few practical ways to handle it are:

  • Leave it sealed if you want to delay the heat problem until you have better cooling infrastructure.
  • Open it deliberately if you can afford to lose some surrounding natural mass and want the heat to disperse passively.
  • Use diagonal building to break into the Magma without fully exposing the chamber at once.
  • Route the heat into a Steam Room and use a Tempshift Plate to move or spread the thermal load more safely.

The fossil geodes are also linked in discovery order: once one fossil body is found and clicked, the other three relics are automatically revealed, making it easier to jump to their coordinates from the details view. The fossil fragment is not counted as a main body for this discovery behavior.
