A gourmet type of mushroom with a unique taste.

Overview

The Truffle is a forageable item that can only be spawned by an adult Pig when it is outside the Barn on The Farm. Because pigs do not go outside during winter, no truffles are produced in that season. Truffles can also be dropped by Truffle Crabs, and they may appear in the Traveling Cart. A Truffle requested for a Help Wanted quest will only be asked for if the player owns a Pig.

Although Truffles are spawned by pigs, they are not treated as animal products, so they do not receive the Rancher price bonus. They are also technically not classified as forage items, even though picking them up on the farm grants Foraging XP. They do not count toward the foraging category at the Stardew Valley Fair, and they are not labeled as forage in the inventory. However, they do benefit from Gatherer and Botanist. Truffles and Red Mushroom are the only mushrooms that cannot be placed in a Dehydrator.

One important timing detail is that Truffles left on the ground do not last forever. If a Truffle is not collected on the 28th day of a season, it disappears the next morning when the new season begins. For that reason, it is best to check pig pastures before the end of each season, especially if the farm has produced multiple Truffles.

Truffles are used in several useful ways:

  • They can be placed in the Sewing Machine spool to create the dyeable Dark Bandana Shirt.
  • They can be used as orange dye at the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s house.
  • They can be processed in an Oil Maker to make Truffle Oil, one of the most valuable uses for the item.

Truffles are also part of the game’s buff and item systems in a few indirect ways. They are not themselves a buff item, but Stardew Valley separates food, drink, and special-effect buffs into distinct categories, and Truffles fit outside those systems as a raw farm drop. Since they are not animal products, they do not interact with profession bonuses the same way eggs, milk, or wool do. When planning farm profit, the main decision is usually whether to sell the Truffle directly or turn it into Truffle Oil first.
